Workplace Bullying - advice for employers



Actions employers should take to address bullying:
  • Have an anti-bullying policy and code of acceptable behaviour for all staff

  • Provide training and information on bullying to raise awareness

  • Ensure managers and supervisors are aware of inappropriate behaviour guidelines

  • Have adequate reporting procedures

  • Ensure workers know about the grievance procedure

  • Follow up reported complaints

  • Offer alternate channels for employee complaints

Training and information

It is a requirement under NSW OH&S legislation that employers provide information and training to employees that is necessary to ensure their health and safety. Management also have the responsibility to apply risk management to eliminate or reduce risks in the workplace. The first step in risk management is the identification of the hazards. In order to identify bullying or harassment in an organisation awareness on the topic needs to be achieved.

The Workers Health Centre can provide awareness courses in Bullying that will assist employers meet their OH&S obligations and be a vital step in addressing this workplace problem. The courses are designed for all employees including managers and supervisors.
