Manual Handling Awareness

Course Aim

Staff will receive training about risk factors, which will raise awareness about safe techniques; how they can play a role in the management of manual handling hazards. The employer will understand the legislative requirements to manage manual handling risks and that consultation and developing safe systems of work are vital in reducing manual handling injuries.

    • Statistical overview of workplace manual handling injuries

  2. Legislative requirements
    • Employer's responsibilities under the NSW OHS Regulation 2001 to adopt a risk management approach to address manual handling
    • Guidance material to support the legislation

  3. Manual handling risk management
    • Risk factors that can lead to injury
    • Video: Safe Lifting Techniques
    • Discussion of common manual handling activities
    • Practical exercise: Risk Assessment and Control Action Plan

  4. Conclusion
    • Importance of consultation and developing safe systems of work to reduce manual handling injuries

The trainer will not demonstrate specific ways to handle materials at your work, as everyone needs to lift or carry in a way that suits them.

Non-Public Courses: The Workers Health Centre can visit your workplace prior to the training. The trainer can then discuss some solutions to reduce manual handling problems in your work environment during the course. Additional fees would apply.
